Program Description:

The Program

Come and visit the land of Oscar Wilde to learn about contemporary LGBTQ issues in Irish society.  Since 1921, the island of Ireland has been partitioned into two separate political entities:  The Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.  The Republic was the first country to vote for marriage equality while same-sex unions remain a contentious issue in the North.  We will visit Belfast, the north Atlantic coast and Dublin to explore complex LGBTQ identities in a distinct socio-historical context.  We will meet with diverse communities and groups to learn about LGBTQ identity in the law, the role of religious beliefs, mental health services, and LGBTQ identities across the lifespan.  We will also take in the beautiful Irish countryside, hospitality, cuisine, and sights!
